After a one-year pilot, the results of the RecycleBank program were impressive. Average recycling rates increased from 17 lbs per household to over 30 lbs per household. Through Leck, residents appreciate the ease of being able to put all their recyclables into one container – the “single stream recycling” approach that is a central component of the RecycleBank program. According to Tina Leck, residents have reported that they really value the program and the type of rewards they can earn. And local businesses have benefitted as well. “I’ve seen the economic stimulus to the local business owners – the mom and pop stores,” says Tina Leck. “They’ve called us saying they’re very happy with the number of people that they’re getting through their doors to redeem rewards.”
Through their partnership, RecycleBank has helped George Leck & Son secure a competitive advantage in their industry. “Many of the residents calling to sign up with our service are aware of the RecycleBank program and identify it as one of the reasons they’ve approached us to be their hauler,” says Tina Leck. “We’ve also been approached by municipalities outside of our service area inquiring about hauling services and the RecycleBank program.” In addition, by diverting more recyclables from the waste stream, the company sees a real cost savings at the landfill and incinerator.
In their competitive industry, George Leck and & Son views their partnership with RecycleBank as a way to further differentiate themselves from their competitors, while helping the communities they service become greener. In doing so, they are able to provide an even greater level of service to their customer, their community, and the environment.
