Hundreds Sign Up for Recycling Rewards Scheme
Written by Kelly Rawlings, Maidenhead Advertiser Published: June 09, 2009
Hundreds have already signed up for the Royal Borough's pioneering recycling reward scheme in the first week.
The three month pilot scheme which was launched on Monday, means that residents will collect points each time they put out their green waste bin. The points will be exchanged for offers at various local businesses.
Within just 48 hours of the launch, nearly 700 people had signed up.
The scheme is the first of its kind in Britain and aims to prevent the council from footing a multi-million pound bill for its landfill.
It is a voluntary scheme and to begin with it is only available to 2,800 people who are already part of the borough's Green Waste scheme.
In September the trial will be expanded to mixed recycling, with all materials such as paper, glass and plastics being put in one bin and rewards based on the weight collection.
RecycleBank Is running the scheme in conjunction with the council and waste management company Veolia Environmental Services.
