Borough to Initiate Reward Scheme to Boost Recycling
Written by Lucy Rees, Recycle.co.uk Published: June 03, 2009
Next week, the first reward scheme for household recycling is being introduced in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
The objective of the scheme is to revolutionise UK household recycling by encouraging residents to take a more active part through rewarding them with points that can be used to buy goods or services.
Initially the programme will be trialled for three months in the council’s green waste collection, before it is introduced to mixed recycling.
Jointly launched by RecycleBank and Veolia Environmental Services, the scheme was based on a rewards programme operated in the US RecycleBank, where it has been proved successful with over a million residents. Households are given the opportunity to sign up for reward points, which they can use to purchase goods and services from participating local and national businesses – or donate the points to charity.
Councillor Liam Maxwell, who is the lead member for sustainability, commented: “The pilot gives us an excellent opportunity to test a system that rewards residents and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill. It also supports our local economy by promoting borough shops and businesses alongside big international names such as Marks & Spencer and Legoland.”
