Pilot Recycling Scheme Under Way
Written by BBC Published: June 01, 2009
An environmentally friendly project rewarding households with points based on the amount they recycle and divert from landfill has got under way.Residents in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, are thought be the first in Britain to take part in the scheme from 1 June.
During the three-month pilot the points achieved can be used to buy goods and services or donated to charity.
They are allocated after the wheelie bins are collected and weighed.
The bins will be fitted with an identification tag which will be read by an automatic reader on refuse vehicles.
The scheme is being run in conjunction with Recyclebank, which runs a similar reward scheme in the US, and the council's waste contractors Veolia.
A maximum number of points will be available, to prevent abuse of the system by people generating extra rubbish for recycling.
