More Trees to Combat London Climate Change

Planting two million trees across the city of London may help reduce the effects of climate change caused temperatures in the coming years according to a new environmental plan.

Studies predict that summer temperatures may rise by 3.9C by the year 2080 in London, but an increase in planted trees by 2025 and the addition of green space throughout London may help reduce the increase according to a recent mayor’s environment report. The report also added that recycling could also help reduce the threat.

RecycleBank trials will be conducted in five London suburbs with vouchers handed out to residents who partake in the recycling project.

London mayor Boris Johnson’s environmental advisor said that trees may also help improve the air quality throughout London adding that that London needs to work together towards becoming a low carbon city by actively participating in green projects.

Mayor Johnson stated that he would help fund 10,000 new trees in the city of London during his election campaign out of which 1,500 have been planted.

London produces a large amount of heat due to the fact that the buildings absorb heat and then release it, but if more walls and roofs had vegetation on them then the amount of heat released would diminish.

The study also reported that install lower energy traffic lights and energy efficient homes could help counter the effects of rising temperatures.
